Bill Clinton remembers what happened to the Democrats in the mid terms after the last Assault Weapon Ban passed.
They got their fucking asses handed to them.
I’m thinking that lesson wasn’t lost on some other politicians either, that’s why they aren’t rushing out and waving their arms in welcome for the latest iteration.
“Do not patronize the passionate supporters of your opponents by looking down your nose at them,” Clinton said.
In other words, don’t be the arrogant fucks you normally are.
“A lot of these people live in a world very different from the world lived in by the people proposing these things,” Clinton said. “I know because I come from this world.”
Don’t forget, Clinton was the Governor of Arkansas before he was the President.
… Clinton said that passing the 1994 federal assault weapons ban “devastated” more than a dozen Democratic lawmakers in the 1994 midterms — and cost then-Speaker of the House Tom Foley (D-Wash.) his job and his seat in Congress.,
A lot of Americans were very seriously pissed off about that gun ban passing and they took their pound of flesh at the next election.
“I’ve had many sleepless nights in the many years since,” Clinton said. One reason? “I never had any sessions with the House members who were vulnerable,” he explained — saying that he had assumed they already knew how to explain their vote for the ban to their constituents.
I wasn’t surprised one bit that happened and it will happen again if the new one is passed.
I would bet money, even if it doesn’t pass, those who do vote for it will get a taste of “voter backlash”.
Clinton isn’t going to run again so he can act the elder statesman he is now and hand out some prudent political advice and some people would be wise to pay fucking attention.
“Do not be self-congratulatory about how brave you are for being for this” gun control push, he said. “The only brave people are the people who are going to lose their jobs if they vote with you.”
I’m thinking that’s straight up the most honest advice he could give them.
Vote your conscience, just be aware there will be repercussions down the road.
No doubt there are a great many people in this country who would very much like to see another “assault weapon” ban in place but the political reality is staring those elected officials who would actually have to vote for it straight in the face.
